Why Trust Cats.com
We’ve spent years fine-tuning our review process and putting brands like Weruva to the test. Before we even select products for testing, we put each cat food brand under a microscope to discover the details about the brand’s history, manufacturing and sourcing practices, recipe formulation, and more. Then, with a general understanding of the brand under our belts, we bring our own cats into the picture for some in-home testing and objective analysis.
In testing cat food products, we pay attention to the little things like appearance and consistency and evaluate the big ticket items like ingredient quality and nutritional value. Our cats provide their personal feedback for details like taste, texture, and overall appeal. We also take customer reviews into consideration when making our assessments.
About Weruva
Weruva was founded in 2006 by David and Stacie Forman and remains a family-owned company to this day. The Formans named their company after their three rescue cats (Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa), taking the first syllable from each name.
Between its dedication to carnivore-focused formulas and its penchant for quirky product names, Weruva quickly became a standout in the pet food industry. The brand continues to specialize in high-moisture recipes made with simple animal ingredients and relatively low plant content. All Weruva products are free from artificial additives, meat by-products, and carrageenan.
Sourcing and Manufacturing
Because Weruva is primarily a wet cat food company, most of its products are manufactured in Thailand. The company partners with a pet and human food processed facility that has earned an “A” designation from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) standard for human consumption.
You can find limited details about Weruva’s ingredient sourcing in the company’s Frequently Asked Questions. According to Weruva, ingredients are sourced locally to the manufacturing facilities as much as possible. Weruva uses cage-free chicken from Thailand, duck from France, turkey from Thailand and the US, beef and lamb from Australia and New Zealand, and wild-caught fish (except tilapia and basa).
Weruva outsources production of its dry cat food recipes to experienced pet food manufacturers located in the United States. The brand doesn’t offer any specific details regarding the sourcing of ingredients for these products.
Has Weruva Cat Food Been Recalled?
None of Weruva’s primary product lines has been involved in a product recall but one of its offshoots has. BFF (Best Feline Friend) was recalled in 2017 due to low thiamine (vitamin B1) levels.
Insufficient levels of thiamine in an Australia-exclusive BFF product line were linked to hundreds of cases of illness and several deaths. The products were manufactured in a single facility that doesn’t handle any other Weruva products.
What Kinds of Cat Food Does Weruva Offer?

Kate Barrington / Cats.com
Weruva offers a variety of pet food products for both dogs and cats, focusing heavily on moisture-rich recipes packed with animal protein. The brand divides its offerings into a number of different product lines, most of which come in cans or pouches.
Here’s a quick overview of Weruva’s product lines:
- Weruva Cat – Classic recipes featuring chicken or fish for kittens and adult cats.
- BFF (Best Feline Friend) – Pouches and variety packs in a wide variety of textures and flavors.
- Cats in the Kitchen – Recipes inspired by home-cooked meals, available in several textures.
- Truluxe – Specialty recipes featuring premium proteins like duck, saba, and grass-fed beef.
- Wx Phos Focused – Supplemental diets formulated with low levels of phosphorus.
- Pamper Like Paris – A premium line of pates and shreds or meaty chunks in gravy.
What makes Weruva popular among the parents of picky eaters is the wide variety of flavor and texture options available. A significant portion of Weruva’s cat food offerings are chicken- or fish-based but other flavors like beef, lamb, and turkey are also available. In addition to smooth pates, Weruva offers shredded recipes, chunky stews, lickable cat treats, and more.
While most of Weruva’s products are wet cat food, the brand has a small selection of dry options. In 2024, Weruva acquired direct-to-consumer product line Cat Person which offers three dry food formulas. A year later, in 2025, Weruva released a fully cooked, freeze-dried version of its Paw Lickin’ Chicken recipe—one of the only freeze-dried cat foods on the market that isn’t raw.

What Do Customers Think of Weruva Cat Food?
Weruva is a well-respected cat food brand that receives primarily positive reviews on product listings and in online discussions.
To get an idea of what real customers are saying about Weruva, here are a few reviews selected from several popular recipes listed on Amazon and Chewy.
Positive Reviews
“This is one of the few cat foods that actually look like what is advertised! It’s real shredded chicken in a light broth that my cats go absolutely nuts for. It’s definitely on the pricier side, but they love it so much that I don’t mind. They literally lick the plate dry!” – by Lisa, reviewing Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken on Dec 14, 2025
“My cats love this food, and they haven’t gotten sick of it two years later!” – by Carly reviewing Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Chicken Frick ‘A Zee on Nov 29, 2025
Negative Reviews
“So my cat used to love this food, but now she won’t touch it and neither will the feral cats that I feed, which tells me something has to be wrong with it! It also made her sick the last time she did eat it and now she won’t get near it.” – by carrie, reviewing Weruva Paw Lickin’ Chicken on Dec 12, 2025
“None of my 3 cats will eat this food. It is a very wet/soupu food and the company pictures look like a drier shredded meal. I tried adding their beloved crushed treats on top and they’ll pick them off and leave the food. Weruva is a good company with lower phosphorus (for a non rx food) and clean decent ingredients, but I haven’t found one line from Weruva that my cats will eat. Tried two cans and threw it all out 🙁 Back to the drawing board.” – by Angela, reviewing Weruva Truluxe Steak Frites Dinner Beef & Pumpkin in Gravy Grain-Free Wet Cat Food on Oct 3, 2025
How Much Does Weruva Cat Food Cost?
Weruva recommends feeding one ounce of food per pound of body weight but it’s worth checking the caloric density of any given recipe to determine your cat’s ideal daily portion. Many Weruva recipes are fairly low-calorie, so some cats may need more food to meet their needs.
Pricing for Weruva cat foods varies among the different product lines. Products from the Classics and Cats in the Kitchen lines range from $0.35-$0.40 per ounce. The average price for recipes in the BFF line range from $0.45-$0.60 while premium products in the Truluxe and Wx (Phos-Focused) lines cost upwards of $0.60 per ounce.
Depending which Weruva product line you choose, the average daily cost to feed a 10-pound cat could be anywhere from $3.50 to $6.00.
Where Is Weruva Cat Food Sold?
You can find Weruva cat food in stores and online. If you prefer to shop in person, you can generally find a varied selection at major national chains like Petco and PetSmart stores as well as regional chains like Pet Supplies Plus. Weruva is also sold by many independent and specialty pet retailers—you can search for locations near you on the Weruva website.
If you prefer to shop online, you can buy all of Weruva’s products on the brand’s website or shop at major online retailers like Chewy and Amazon. Other online retailers that sell Weruva products include Petco, PetSmart, Pet Supermarket, Pet Food Express, and Pet Supplies Plus.
Overall, Is Weruva a Good Choice?
If you’re looking for a high-moisture food made primarily from meat with minimal plant content, Weruva might be a good choice. Many of their products are virtually plant-free and low in carbohydrates, making them species-appropriate for your obligate carnivore. There’s also a pretty wide range of flavor and texture options (not to mention variety packs), so Weruva could be a good place to start if you have a picky eater.
On the negative side, Weruva cat food can be pricey and low in calories, meaning that it costs over $3 and up to $6 or more per day. It’s also worth noting that while many Weruva products are chicken-free or fish-free, they’re made on shared equipment which makes them subject to cross-contamination. Some cats with severe allergies may react to Weruva foods, even if they don’t contain the specific protein they’re allergic to.
